Three Bahraini human rights organizations commend the statement issued by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights regarding the recent events that took place in Jau Central Prison, calling for the Bahraini authorities to respond to the requests made for the release of the prisoners of conscience and to effectively investigate the events of Building 12 and Building 13 on the 17th of April. The statement also highlighted the general conditions of the prisoners, especially those who have been forcibly detained.
The organizations also affirm that the prison administration’s use of unnecessary and disproportionate force to break up peaceful sit-ins held by the prisoners, the increase in deaths in the prison – the most recent case being Abbas Mal Allah, whose death was a result of prevention of medical treatment – and the increasing cases of brutal and violent attacks on prisoners require an urgent and immediate visit by the rapporteurs, one of which being the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
